Explore Naples Underground — waterworks, catacombs, shelters

Under the city lies another Naples in layers: mining galleries turned aqueducts, early-Christian catacombs beneath churches, and 20th-century shelters used during wartime.

How to reach the underground and catacombs

Points are scattered between the Old Town and Rione Sanità. Most tours start from clear meeting points and are easy to reach by metro, bus or on foot.

By Train

From Napoli Centrale/Garibaldi take Metro Line 1 to ‘Museo’ or ‘Toledo’. For the Rione Sanità catacombs get off at ‘Materdei’ and continue on foot or by a short bus ride.

By Car

Historic areas have ZTL restrictions. Park near Piazza del Plebiscito, Via Toledo, or the National Archaeological Museum and continue on foot or by metro.

By Bus

Local buses serve Rione Sanità and the centre (routes may change). Regular services link the National Archaeological Museum to entrances and meeting points.

On Foot

From Piazza San Gaetano it’s a short walk to the Napoli Sotterranea entrance. Bourbon tunnel entrances are near Via Domenico Morelli; catacombs are most easily reached from Materdei via the Sanità bridges.
